Americans United Fights to Have Crosses Removed from Utah Highways
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State is asking the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a lower-court ruling that allows memorial crosses along Utah highways, claiming state-endorsed religion is being forced onto the public. In November, a district judge ruled the Utah Highway Patrol Association could continue to place 12-foot crosses along the highway to pay tribute to officers killed in the line of duty. The Alliance Defends Fund (ADF) represented the group.“It’s ridiculous that a small group … would seek to stop the families of slain troopers from honoring their loved ones,” ADF senior counsel Byron Babione said at the time of the lower-court ruling."The memorials signify the service and death of an officer, and such memorials should not be censored based on the hurt feelings of passersby.”
