Eritrea: A Christian Burial Ground

Since 2002, more than two thousand Christians have been arrested in Eritrea.Imprisoned across the country in dark cells, military barracks, and metal shipping containers, these believers have never been taken to court or allowed to see their lawyers. They have been tortured and martyred for their faith.Eritrea won its independence from Ethiopia in 1993.Today, Eritrea has no constitution, and the ruling party is the only legal political party in the country. Its Communist rulers enacted legislation in 2002 that restricted recognized Christian denominations to the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Eritrean Lutheran Evangelical Church, and the Roman Catholic Church. Believers outside of these denominations who have not yet been imprisoned have been forced underground or chased out of the country.
